AMC 10 Introduction

The AMC 10 is a national math competition held every November. It’s open to students in Grade 10 or below and is often the first major step toward more advanced contests like the AIME and USA(J)MO. Compared to the AMC 8 (typically taken in January), the AMC 10 includes more complex math and deeper problem-solving.

For many students aiming for math excellence, the school year follows a competition timeline: AMC 10 in November, AIME in February, and Olympiad-level contests (USAJMO/USAMO) in the spring. That’s why understanding the exam’s timing, format, and scoring is key to staying on track.

Quick Facts about the AMC 10

  • Full Name: American Mathematics Competitions 10
  • Organizer: Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
  • Eligibility: Students in Grade 10 or below, under 17.5 years old on test day
  • Format: 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes
  • Scoring: 6 points for each correct answer, no penalty for wrong answers
  • Versions: AMC 10A and AMC 10B (you can take one or both; questions differ)

Topics Covered

The AMC 10 focuses on math typically taught from middle school through early high school, but the problems are more challenging and require flexible thinking. Main topics include:

  • Algebra – linear equations, inequalities, factoring
  • Geometry – triangles, circles, coordinate geometry, area and volume
  • Number Theory – divisibility, prime numbers, remainders
  • Counting & Probability – combinatorics, arrangements, basic probability reasoning

You can take either version, or both, depending on your center’s availability.

How to Register for 2025 AMC 10

Registration Process in the United States

In the U.S., individual students and parents cannot register directly for the AMC 10. Registration must be completed through a certified AMC test center, such as a school or learning institution. These centers purchase exam seats from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and are responsible for administration and proctoring. So, all participants need to complete the following two steps to register for the exam:

  1. Purchase an exam seat at a test center near you.
  2. Create an account on the MAA website and complete the exam registration form. For detailed instructions, please refer to this page.

Since 2023, AMC 10 has returned to in-person testing with two options:

  • Paper-based exam
  • Computer-based exam
  • All formats require in-person proctoring by an authorized teacher or administrator.

AMC 10 registration FAQs at Think Academy

Q1. What if my preferred test time or location is already full?

Seats can change as we get closer to the exam. We may open additional sessions, and families will be notified by email or parent groups if more spots become available.
👉 Our recommendation: secure any available time first to guarantee a seat. If new sessions open, you’ll be able to switch.

Q2. What happens if we register but later can’t attend, or want to change to another session?

No worries — cancellations are refundable. You can register with confidence knowing your payment is protected.

Q3. Can we adjust our exam time after registering?

Yes. As long as there are open seats (or if new ones are added), you may change your time. We’ll share updates via email or group announcements — just keep an eye out.

If there is no Think Academy location near you, use the official AMC search tool to locate a nearby test center: Find an AMC Testing Site by ZIP Code (Note: The search tool will be available during the active registration period.)

Registration for International Student

Outside the United States, AMC 10 is administered through regional AMC partners. Students must contact their local country’s AMC coordinator to register.

How to Prepare for 2025 AMC 10?

Start by taking a full-length mock exam. This helps you assess your current performance, identify strengths and gaps, and set a realistic target—whether it’s reaching the AIME cut-off, Honor Roll, or DHR. Then, follow this structured approach to prepare efficiently:

Step 1: Diagnose with Mock Exams (4–6 months before the test)
Begin with timed mock exams to simulate real test conditions. Analyze your results to understand your baseline and determine whether your current level is closer to AIME qualification or if foundational work is needed. This step helps personalize your prep plan.

Step 2: Secure the First 10 Questions
The first 10 problems are your must-win points. Answering them correctly earns you 82.5 points—a solid base toward AIME. Focus on consistency and accuracy here. If you miss these, it’s a sign to revisit fundamental topics.

Step 3: Fix Common Mistakes in Mid-Level Problems (2–3 months before)
Between questions 11 and 17, small errors—especially with algebra, geometry setups, or problem interpretation—can cost you crucial points. Use targeted review to clean up logic errors and miscalculations. Build habits that reduce careless mistakes.

Step 4: Push for the Final Stretch (last month before the test)
The final 5 questions (21–25) are challenging for everyone—but solving even 1–2 can make the difference between Honor Roll and DHR. In your final prep stage, shift focus to pattern recognition, strategy, and advanced techniques to gain an edge.

Here is some advice, I qualified for AIME with a 105 on the AMC 10 A on the 2024 test, and I can tell you that taking mocks are really helpful, I only mocked and back then I only knew school math and I made AIME.

I made USAJMO by getting an 144 on the AMC 10 and a 11 on AIME. I can also tell you that taking mocks are helpful but you need to do other stuff also like alcumus.
